John J. Salesses

General John J. Salesses was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in June 1954, upon graduation from Providence College. Following completion of The Basic School in 1954, he was a student at The Armor School, Fort Knox, Kentucky. Assigned as a Tank Platoon Leader in 1st Tank Battalion, (March 1955 through April 1956) he then reported to the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, where he served as a Series Officer until June 1958.
As a reservist, he served as Commanding Officer of Service Battery in the 2d 155mm Howitzer Battalion in Providence, Rhode Island, from 1958-60, Platoon Leader with the 76th Rifle Company in Steubenville, Ohio and Training Assistant at Camp Lejeune. Next, he was Commanding Officer of the 1st 155mm Howitzer Battery, Newport, Rhode Island, during which time he attended the Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was a member of VTU 1-21 from 1965 to 1968, working for the Long Range Study Panel at Quantico.
From 1972 until 1975, General Salesses was a member of the 17th Staff Group, Boston, serving as Artillery Officer, then S-3. He was Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 25th Marines from 1975 until 1977, when he was promoted to Colonel. From 1977 until 1979, he was a member of MTU RI-1, which completed the draft of FMFM 3-4 Electronic Warfare Operations.
He attended the National War College at Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C. and returned as a seminar leader in the summer of 1977. While Officer in Charge (OIC) of Detachment #1 of 2d MAB (1980), he was selected for promotion to Brigadier General and was assigned as Commanding General, 4th Force Service Support Group.
As Deputy Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, General Salesses was advanced to Major General on 18 May 1983. In 1986, he was assigned as Deputy Commanding General, MCDEC Quantico and recalled to active duty in 1987 (as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Reserve Affairs).
Currently, General Salesses is Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies at Rhode Island College. He earned a Ph.D. in Sixteenth Century English Literature from the University of Rhode Island. He has served as Chairman of the English Department and Director of the General Studies Program at Rhode Island College and has taught at Ohio University, the College of Steubenville and the University of Rhode Island. He also was a member of the adjunct facility at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.
General Salesses and his wife, the former Dolores Ann Serbst of Bristol, Rhode Island, have four children: John, Robert (Captain, USMC), Gregory (Lieutenant, USMCR) and Beth Ann.
