General Robert H. Barrow Distinguished
Chair of Military Studies
Provides the Marine Corps University with a resident military historian, military practitioner and strategic scholar. The Chair’s primary teaching focus is an elective course at the Command and Staff College as a part of its Electives Program. As an experienced, retired Marine General Officer, the Chair is also engaged in various guest lecture, subject matter expert, panel and seminar opportunities throughout the University. The Chair’s experience is drawn upon in many different areas to include: Information Operations, Public Affairs, Combat Leadership, Role of the Advisor, Women in the Military and extensive Vietnam and Desert Storm combat operations insights and lessons learned topics. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds The General Robert H. Barrow Distinguished Chair of Military Studies through a generous donation from MCUF Trustee, Mr. Bruce H. Hooper. Brigadier General Thomas V. Draude, USMC (Ret), President and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation is the current Chairholder.
Donald Bren Chair of Innovation and Transformation
Provides the Marine Corps University a resident scholar possessing significant experience and knowledge in innovative thinking, process reengineering, technology insertion and organizational reform. The Chair teaches an elective course at the Command and Staff College and frequently lectures throughout the University on a wide range of topics to include Combat Operations, Combat Leadership, Views of the Commander, Command and Control, Operational Design and other professional military education and leadership topics. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Donald Bren Chair of Innovation and Transformation through a generous donation from Mr. Donald Bren, a former Marine and Chairman of The Irvine Company. Lieutenant General Paul K. Van Riper, USMC (Ret) is the current Chairholder.
Major General Matthew C. Horner
Chair of Military Theory
Designed to provide the Marine Corps University with a resident scholar of national or international repute with expertise in military history, national security affairs, international relations or military art. In addition to serving on the faculty of MCU, the Chair is charged with conducting significant and scholarly research and completing a book during his/her tenure as the Horner Chair. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Horner Chair of Military Theory through a generous donation from Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Saunders, III in honor of Mrs. Saunders’ father, the late Major General Matthew C. Horner. The Chairholder for Academic Years 2008 - 2010 is Dr. Matthew Hughes from Brunel University in the United Kingdom.
Kim T. Adamson Chair of Insurgency and Terrorism
Focuses on the theory and nature of terrorism and insurgencies; terrorist organizations and ideologies; the political, economic, military and psychological impacts of terrorist acts and insurgents' tactics; and, the most effective means to combat terrorism and insurgencies. The Chair speaks at many of the schools/colleges within MCU and conducts an elective course at Command and Staff College. At least once a year, the Chair visits external USMC forces or headquarters. The Chair writes for publications, participates in conferences and otherwise represents the University in public discussion and debate on terrorism, counter-terrorism and insurgency issues. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Kim T. Adamson Chair of Insurgency and Terrorism through a generous donation from MCUF Trustee, Ms. Kim Adamson, a Marine Reserve Chief Warrant Officer 5. She created this Chair because of her Marine, police and civil judgeship experiences and keen interest in this topic. Dr. Mark A. Moyar is the current Chairholder.
Donald Bren Chair of Ethics and Leadership
Provides a resident scholar who focuses on the moral and ethical aspects of war, military service, service to a free democratic society and Just War Theory. The Chair incorporates professional military ethics into the varied curricula for all ranks within the Marine Corps’ educational continuum and advises the MCU President on all matters relating to military ethics. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Donald Bren Chair of Ethics and Leadership through a generous donation from Mr. Donald Bren, a former Marine and Chairman of The Irvine Company. Dr. Paolo G. Tripodi is the current Chairholder and has held this position since the Chair's inception in 2003. Dr. Tripodi teaches throughout the University and lectures abroad as well.
Brigadier General H. L. Oppenheimer
Chair of Warfighting Strategy
Provides the Marine Corps University a 6-month resident scholar with expertise in military history or national security affairs. In addition to lecturing at the University’s colleges, the Oppenheimer Chair teaches a graduate-level spring elective in an area in which the occupant has expertise. Additionally, the Oppenheimer Chair supports professional military education programs for the Operating Forces and the Supporting Establishment when called upon. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Brigadier General H. L. Oppenheimer Chair of Warfighting Strategy through the generous donations from family members, Mr. Gerald H. Oppenheimer and Mr. Reed J. Oppenheimer. The Chair is unfilled for Academic Year 2008 – 2009, but the Foundation is optimistic that it will resume during the spring semester of Academic Year 2009 - 2010.
Guy P. Wyser-Pratte Chair of French Studies
Provides the Marine Corps University with a non-resident expert and scholar in French Studies that includes the study of the country, culture, language, national and international effects, economics and the impact of international affairs, especially the French influence on Africa. The Chair teaches classes throughout the academic year at MCU that address the above areas in concert with current curricula programs. Additionally, the Chair is available for regionally focused instruction on Africa to deploying Operating Forces and Supporting Establishment commands. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Guy P. Wyser-Pratte Chair of French Studies through the generous donation from MCUF’s Vice Chairman, Mr. Guy P. Wyser-Pratte. Mr. Remy Mauduit is the current Chairholder.
Case Study Project
Provides the Marine Corps University with a Senior Fellow position whose holder explores, researches, develops and incorporates into the various curricula of MCU the Harvard Business School (HBS) Case Study Methodology. The Case Study Project’s primary focus is at the Expeditionary Warfare School to teach the skills of conventional expeditionary warfare to young officers who have a great deal of experience in irregular warfare in a way that validates and builds upon those experiences. However, the Senior Fellow also works with many other schools/colleges of MCU. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Case Study Project through a generous donation from Mr. Michael J. Zak. The current and first Senior Fellow is Dr. Bruce I. Gudmundsson.
General Graves B. Erskine Distinguished Lecture Series
Brings distinguished representatives from government, education, journalism and other major fields to Quantico twice each academic year with a lecture in each semester. Its purpose is to broaden the perspective of the University's students in the social, political and cultural dimensions of the nation and the world. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the General Graves B. Erskine Distinguished Lecture Series through a generous donation from now deceased Mrs. Graves B. (Connie) Erskine, in honor of her late husband
Leadership Communications Skills Center
Provides the Marine Corps University with a Senior and Junior Fellow that provides professional communication and education development advice to faculty and staff, educational assistance and support for the students and other activities related to professional military education at MCU. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Leadership Communications Skills Center through a generous donation from MCUF Founding Chairman, The Honorable Anthony D. Marshall. The current and first Senior Fellow is Dr. Patrice M. Scanlon and the Junior Fellow is Ms. Andrea Hamlen.
Mutter Marines Command and Control Symposium
Provides the Expeditionary Warfare School with a conference dedicated to illustrating and reinforcing the inseparable connection between tactical and operational success in connection with command and control issues, especially in today’s operating environment. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Mutter Marines Command and Control Symposium through the generous donations of the “Mutter Marines,” Lieutenant General Carol A. Mutter USMC (Ret) and Colonel James M. Mutter, USMC (Ret).
Major General John H. Russell Leadership Conference
Focuses on leadership issues of interest and importance to the Marine Corps. Approximately 200 selected participants from throughout the Marine Corps, the Department of Defense and the civilian/academic community spend four days examining and discussing issues related to the selected theme. The conference presents its final report to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Afterwards a published report is disseminated throughout the Corps. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Major General John H. Russell Leadership Conference through a generous donation from the late MCUF Honorary Trustee, Mrs. Vincent Astor.
Sergeant Walker K. Singleton
Distinguished Lecture Series
Broadens the leadership perspective of students at the Quantico Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy. Each spring a special guest speaker addresses current leadership issues of concern to the enlisted leaders of the Corps. Many members of the Singleton Family attend the annual lecture and, occasionally, members of the Singleton Detachment of the Marine Corps League from Memphis, Tennessee. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Sergeant Walker K. Singleton Distinguished Lecture Series through the generous donations from the Singleton Detachment of the Marine Corps League and the Singleton family.
"Yale Class of '51" Media Day Symposium
Promotes the understanding of military media relationships and responsibilities by bringing in featured guest panelists from the national media. Recently, this program has incorporated and focused on Strategic Communications and its role on the battlefield. Students are exposed to the various aspects of Strategic Communications and how to take full advantage of media and other means of communications as staff officers and commanders. The Marine Corps University Foundation funds the Yale Class of 1951 Media Day Symposium through the generous donations from former MCUF Trustees, Mr. Leonard M. Horner, Mr. W. John Driscoll and Mr. Frank C. Gardner in memory of Mr. Peter Braestrup, Marine and journalist.
